Common questions and tips from our work with Scott City customers.
- How is a boat's fair-market value determined?
- An appraiser starts with the make, model, year and length, then looks at recent sales of comparable boats and published valuation guides. The boat's actual condition, engine hours, equipment and electronics, and any damage or upgrades move the number up or down. Inspecting the boat in person is what separates a documented appraisal from a guess based on a listing.
- Do I need an appraisal to donate a boat?
- For larger noncash donations, the IRS generally requires a qualified appraisal to support the deduction, and the charity cannot set the value for you. Check the current rules with your tax advisor before you donate. An independent appraisal documents the boat's condition and fair-market value at the time of the gift, which is what the paperwork asks for.
Tip
Gather Records Before an Appraisal
Pull together the title or documentation, registration, engine hour readings, maintenance records, receipts for major upgrades such as repowers or new electronics, and a list of included equipment and trailer. Records like these support the value in the report and help an insurer, lender, estate attorney or buyer understand why the boat is worth what it is.
