Learn moreAbout Pre-Purchase Surveys
Common questions and tips from our work with Scott City customers.
- When should I order a pre-purchase survey?
- Order it after you and the seller agree on a price, with the offer made subject to a satisfactory survey. That gives you room to renegotiate or walk away if the survey turns up problems. Many lenders and insurers also ask for a survey on a used boat before they will finance or cover it, so the same report can serve all three purposes.
- Does the boat need to be out of the water?
- A full picture usually needs both. In the water, the boat can be checked under load and run on a sea trial. Out of the water, the bottom, running gear, through-hulls and transom can be inspected directly. Boats on a trailer or in dry storage can be surveyed where they sit. Talk through the boat's location and setup when you call so the survey plan fits.
- What does a survey look for in the hull?
- The surveyor checks for blisters, cracks, impact damage, past repairs and signs of moisture in cored areas such as decks and transoms. Sounding the hull and using a moisture meter help find soft or wet spots that are not visible. Fittings, hardware and the hull-to-deck joint are also inspected, since leaks and rot often start there.
Tip
Get the Seller Ready Before Survey Day
Confirm with the seller that the boat will be accessible, the batteries are charged, fuel is aboard for a sea trial if one is planned, and the keys are on hand. Ask for any maintenance records, engine hour logs and title or registration paperwork. Clearing personal gear out of lockers and the bilge area makes it possible to inspect the spaces that matter.
